If you want to make sure that your fire sprinkler is always working as it should be, then there are a few things you can do to make sure that you’re complying with current regulations.
Weekly Inspections
If you have a fire sprinkler system, then you need to make sure that it is always operating efficiently. Failure to spot a potential issue could result in a life-or-death situation, showing how important it is to take maintenance seriously.
On a weekly basis, you should be trying to check your gauges. Look for a normal reading on both the air and water pressure dials, as this is often the best way for you to find out if there are any underlying issues with your system.
You should also take the time to check the control valves as well. These should be properly sealed, locked in place, and free from leaks. They should be in the “open” position as well.
You might have different indicators on your system that show which part of the sprinkler that part controls, so take note of this and make sure that you are always mindful of what’s normal for your system.
Although doing your own checks is important, you shouldn’t overlook getting a fire sprinkler servicing team to look over your system from time to time.
This way, you can make sure that your system is always working to the highest level of efficiency while ensuring the safety of everyone in the building.
Monthly Inspections
Every month, you should be looking at the gauges on your water pipes. Make sure that the water pressure is being maintained at the same level as previous readings, and also check for any damage.
Your alarm valve should also be inspected every month to make sure that this is working as it should. Again, a fire sprinkler servicing team can help you with things like this if you don’t know what to look for.
Every three months or so, make sure that the hydraulic nameplate is secured to the riser.
Yearly Inspections
Every year, at a minimum, you should book a professional inspection. A technician will visit your building and inspect your system to make sure that your building is both safe and up to code.
They will also maintain the components of your sprinkler system, including:

Gauges
Alarm Devices
Deluge Valves
Main Drains
Water Flow
Bracing
Control Valves
Sprinkler Heads
Antifreeze
It may be that gauges have to be tested or replaced every five years or so as well. A technician will be able to determine the calibration for you, which is an important step. Your sprinkler head should be replaced roughly every 30 years.
If yours are fast-response sprinkler heads, then there is a good chance that they will need to be replaced more frequently.
Your valves should be checked every five years, and if your system is damaged, you should really book a full inspection to make sure that there is no other damage throughout the system.
The Dangers of Missing Repairs
It doesn't matter whether you have a large commercial building or you operate a small restaurant; you have to make sure that your sprinklers are safe, as this is the best way for you to save lives in the event of a fire.
If your sprinkler heads have not been wiped down in quite some time, then this can result in distorted spray patterns. Water may even be blocked from reaching the sprinkler head, which can result in fire spreading throughout your building.
If you have a build-up of dirt or grime around your sprinkler head, then the internal element may be insulated, which means your system won’t activate in the event of a fire.
Ultimately, having a sprinkler system is the best way for you to get a strong sense of security. With that said, if you don’t maintain your system and if you don’t take the time to inspect it on a regular basis, then you are putting your building and the people in it at risk.
Simple things like using a damp rag to clean away any residual dust around the sprinkler head can make a big difference, as can using a canned air sprayer to dislodge any cobwebs.
If you’re uncomfortable with heights, then a fire sprinkler service can take care of this for you when they come to inspect your system.
Simply book in for an inspection and you will soon find that it’s easier than ever to ensure safety.
